Other than maintaining the reputation for brewing some of the best beers in the world, much about Greene King has changed in its 200-year history

From relatively humble beginnings, our company has grown into a formidable and dynamic force in a highly competitive sector. Our three business units together contributed to a turnover in 2000/2001 of £431 million, with a profit before tax of £62.8 million. We now employ nearly 11,000 people, have a pub estate of around 1,700 houses, and operate distribution depots in Abingdon near Oxford, Crayford in Kent, and Northampton.

Our objective is to become the leading pub retailer-brewer, in terms of profitability and market share, in the south of England. In this area, we are more than capable of competing on equal terms with the national brewers and specialist pub operating companies.

We will do this by being focused on delivering the best support and service to our licensees, managers and customers. All Greene King's current strategies are designed with this in mind.

Greene King brews all its beers at Bury St Edmunds. The company is still as committed to brewing today as it was when it started some 200 years ago, and is proud of the quality, variety and reputation of its excellent range of cask, keg and bottled beers.

We intend to maintain our investment in, and commitment to, cask ale in the knowledge that national brewers are selling, closing or scaling down their brewing activities, or moving away from the cask ale market to place greater emphasis on brewing lager and nitrokeg beers. We are growing our market share by continuing to brew the 'craft' beers on which we have grown our reputation. We are in a prime position to fill the gaps others are leaving in the market.
